The UK and US have secured a landmark bilateral deal that will guarantee no tariffs on British medicine shipments entering the US market.

The Terms of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to increase funding on medicines through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge guarantees that duties on these crucial products will stay at zero for a timeframe of 36 months.

This development comes after previous threats to dramatically increase import taxes on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures floated as high as one hundred percent.

"This arrangement between the United Kingdom bolsters the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and brings long-overdue balance to American-British pharmaceutical trade," a statement noted.

Trade Importance

Medicines represent one of the the United Kingdom's most significant export categories to the America, which is by far the primary market for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Statistics show that in the year to the end of September, the UK shipped drugs worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This value made up nearly one-fifth of British export trade in that span.

"This agreement protects employment, boosts funding and facilitates the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Specific British Pledges

The agreement includes several specific pledges from the UK:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it deems new treatments to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to double overall public funding on treatments from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must refund to the NHS to prevent overspending will be restricted at fifteen percent. Last year, repayments topped 20%.

Industry Background

The pact comes amid a long-running row between the sector and the UK government over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

This friction were heightened by assertions that American patients were charged significantly more for the identical medicines than people in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while major funding commitments have been announced toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS had to invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the past decade.
