Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
