Honest Memo

The Corporate Battle Over CNN Shows The Extent to Which Flawed American Journalism Has Become.

Late Thursday, as rumors swirled about a shooting at Brown University, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins posted on social media, highlighting the uncertainty and directing people to her network’s 9pm newscast.

Although it is by no means a impeccable news source, her message seemed accurate to many. It remains one of the broadcasters where there exists reality-based and mostly reliable reporting – notably during crises such as the one unfolding in the vicinity of a New Hampshire storage facility.

A Vulnerable Position During a Business Struggle

But CNN, now 45 years old, finds itself in a precarious situation as two giant media conglomerates vie for ownership of its corporate owner, Warner Bros Discovery.

No matter the result, the future of CNN has been drawn into a high-risk game of business acquisition, rather than as a question of what benefits the news-consuming public.

“This is yet another example of the deep structural problems with roots in decades of policy decisions,” stated Victor Pickard, author of “Democracy Without Journalism?” and a media policy professor at the Pennsylvania University.

The speculation about which company will control Warner Bros Discovery – will it be Netflix or Paramount Skydance? – overlooks a broader point.

“It is often framed as a business story with influential figures as the main characters, but there is scant discussion of the common good,” Pickard explained.

The Complicating Layer: Political Influence

This situation is complicated by Donald Trump’s longstanding stance about a network he has long portrayed as perhaps his primary “fake news” adversary.

Think back to the cries of “CNN sucks!” at Trump's rallies, his administration’s punitive withdrawal of reporter Jim Acosta’s press credentials, or his sparring with Collins in official meetings.

Trump now claims that CNN needs new ownership. You can read that as ownership that will protect him from criticism and scrutiny. That is one reason why he appears to support Paramount Skydance, which has made a aggressive takeover attempt.

Trump has reason to prefer that company more. For one thing, it is controlled by David Ellison, son of the ally of Trump Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people.

The company, owner of CBS News, also recently installed the conservative Bari Weiss, noted for her “anti-woke” beliefs, as the editor-in-chief of that historic news network.

A Future of More Uncertainty

Notably, if Netflix prevails, CNN and other cable outlets would first be separated into a separate entity. This might be a relief to many at the network, but it’s hardly a secure position. That arrangement could set up CNN for another sale. It never ends.

In the view of Timothy Wu, a great deal of this is illegal, anyway. The prominent critic of big tech’s dominance stated that anti-trust laws should disallow both deals.

“Either merger would be harmful to the country, and both should be challenged by regulators,” Wu recently wrote.

The Bigger Challenge and a Path Forward

No matter the outcome in this situation, the underlying crisis persists.

“Our current system is a very system hostile to democracy, but we must resist learned helplessness,” Pickard noted. Regulatory choices – originating in the 1930s and 1940s – helped to create this profit-obsessed monster, and different policy decisions can fix it.

Can reform occur in an era where the head of the FCC refuses to acknowledge that the agency is independent? Change is very unlikely now, but that should not imply it will not happen in the future.

Initiatives that strengthen independent news organizations, aid local journalism, fund public media, and outlaw the concentration of media power in a handful of hands are not only possible – they are vital for a robust democracy.

When it comes to media ownership, bigger isn’t better. And news organizations including CNN cannot be tools in the newest acquisition battle.
